Vitry-le-François
Vitry-le-François , town (1990 pop. 17,483), Marne dept., NE France, on the Marne River. Textiles and earthenware are the chief manufactures. The town was founded by Francis I in 1545. During World War I it was the headquarters of General Joseph Joffre; in World War II the town was almost completely destroyed. Monuments include the Notre Dame Church (17th-18th cent.).
