University of Tokyo at Tokyo, Japan; founded in 1877. In the 1920s it became one of the first Imperial universities and remains one of the most prestigious in Japan. It offers degrees in letters, law, economics, education, engineering, science, medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, and agriculture. The university houses institutes for earthquake research, cosmic ray research, nuclear study, solid-state physics, applied microbiology, industrial science, ocean research, journalism, historiography, and Asian culture.
