Redwood National Park

Redwood National Park 112,430 acres (45,518 hectares), along the Pacific coast, NW Calif.; est. 1968. Backed by coastal bluffs, 40 mi (64 km) of beach, lagoon, and rocky coast are preserved in their natural state; seals, sea lions, and birds live on offshore rocks. Inland, numerous stands of virgin California redwood, many over 2,000 years old, are found. The world's tallest known tree, the redwood Hyperion (379.1 ft/115.5 m), is located in the park. With the neighboring Jedediah Smith Redwoods, Del Norte Coast Redwoods, and Prairie Creek Redwoods state parks, the park is a unit of the Redwoods National and State Parks, which protect nearly 39,000 acres (15,800 hectares) of old-growth redwood forest.
