Nekhtnebf I , Gr. Nectanebos I, king of ancient Egypt (379-361 BC), founder of the XXX dynasty. By the gallant defense of the fortresses of the Nile delta and then of Memphis, he saved his country from the Persian invasion of Pharnabazus in 374 BC This defeat of the Persians touched off a general revolt of the satraps of W Asia, which occupied Persia for the rest of his reign. He built splendid temples at Bubastis, Memphis, Abydos, Al Karnak, and Edfu. His son, Tachos, while invading Syria, was overthrown by Nekhtnebf II (reigned 359-343). Nekhtnebf II built an all-granite temple at Horbeit, a kiosk at Philae, and statues at Abydos and Bubastis. Persia had now recovered its strength and bent all its efforts to reconquer Egypt. With Spartan aid Nekhtnebf was able to resist the first attack in 351, but in 343, hopelessly outnumbered, he was defeated and fled to Upper Egypt.
