William Mulready

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | Date: 2008

William Mulready , 1786-1863, Irish genre painter. He began as a drawing master and an illustrator of children's books. After 1809 he devoted himself to genre subjects and gained a considerable reputation. His popular paintings show the influences of Sir David Wilkie and of the Dutch school. Well-known examples are The Sonnet and First Love (both: Victoria and Albert Mus.) and Snow Scene (Tate Gall., London). Mulready illustrated Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.
