James Loeb
James Loeb 1867-1933, American banker and philanthropist, b. New York City; son of Solomon Loeb. He entered (1888) Kuhn, Loeb and Company and retired from business at 34. Most of the rest of his life was spent abroad. He founded and endowed the Loeb Classical Library, a series of inexpensive yet attractive books containing on facing pages the original Greek and Latin texts and the English translations. He also founded (1905) in New York City the Institute of Musical Art, now part of the Juilliard School , and a clinic for psychiatric study in Munich.
