Maximilien Paul Émile Littré , 1801-81, French lexicographer. Known as a positivist philosopher and as professor of history and geography at the École polytechnique, Littré is best remembered for his dictionary of the French language (5 vol., 1863-72), for his translation of Hippocrates, and for his works in medical history.
