Robert Indiana

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | 2008 | Copyright

Robert Indiana , 1928-, American artist, b. New Castle, Ind., as Robert Clarke. A leading figure in the pop art movement of the 1960s, he has specialized in making signs in various media, inspired by billboards and posters in the American landscape. His best known image, LOVE, first created (1964) for a Christmas card printed by New York's Museum of Modern Art, has been the subject of many of his paintings, sculptures, and prints, and has appeared as a U.S. postage stamp and in untold numbers of posters, reproductions, and commercial adaptations.
