Finger Lakes

From: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | Date: 2008 | Copyright information

Finger Lakes group of 11 narrow glacial lakes in north to south valleys, W central N.Y. Cayuga and Seneca lakes, both more than 35 mi (56 km) long, are the largest and deepest. Keuka Lake is the center of the area's wine industry, the largest in New York. Fertile soil and hillsides receiving abundant sunshine make this an important viticulture and truck-farming region; fruits and buckwheat are important crops. The Finger Lakes provide water for Rochester and other cities. The region has noted resorts like Watkins Glen , boating centers, and numerous state and other parks, and Cayuga and Seneca lakes are connected to the New York State Canal System .
