Bernhard Eduard Fernow , 1851-1923, American forester, b. Germany. In 1876 he emigrated to the United States and became a leader in the movement to protect forests against fire and exploitation. In 1886 he was appointed chief of the Division of Forestry, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. He organized several of the schools of forestry in the United States and Canada. Among his publications are Economics of Forestry (1902), A Brief History of Forestry (1907, 3d ed. 1913), and The Care of Trees in Lawn, Street, and Park (1910).
