Wilhelm Knyphausen, Baron von , 1716-1800, German general in British service in the American Revolution. He served in the army of Frederick the Great before coming to America with the Hessian troops in 1776. Knyphausen distinguished himself in the battles at White Plains, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. He commanded (1779-80) New York in the absence of Sir Henry Clinton.
