Verner Clapp

From: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition  |  Date: 2008

Verner Clapp 1901-72, American librarian, b. Johannesburg, South Africa. After studying philosophy at Harvard, Clapp worked for the Library of Congress (1922-56), becoming chief assistant librarian in 1947. He also did much work for the United Nations and served as chairman of the U.S. Library Mission to Japan (1947-48). From 1956 to 1967 he was president of the Council on Library Resources. He has written The Future of the Research Library (1963) and Copyright: A Librarian's View (1968).
