Faddey Venediktovich Bulgarin , 1789–1859, Russian journalist and novelist, b. Poland. Bulgarin's original name was Tadeusz Bulharyn. In 1825 he and Nicholas Grech founded the influential conservative daily Northern Bee, in which he inveighed against liberal writers, notably Pushkin. He wrote several historical novels, including Ivan Vyzhigin (1830, tr. 1831).
