Britannica Concise Encyclopedia | Date: 2007
Ancient district, northeastern Anatolia adjoining the Black Sea. An independent kingdom with its capital at Amasia, it was established in the 4th century . It continued expanding its borders until 66 , when its last king, Mithradates VI Eupator, was defeated by the Roman general Pompey the Great. It was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 63 .
