Approved church renovations did not split congregation; Pictures should be done as originally intended Regarding the Greek Orthodox church, why do people insist on messing with tradition? There is hardly any left in our society. Is it any wonder in our times that our children are out of control? Look at adults. There are no traditions upheld, nothing is truly sacred, everything is in need of change. This is what is being taught by example to our children. That everything can be replaced by bigger, better, faster, more interesting paraphernalia. Teach our children that there is some carry-over, stability and love and redo the pictures as they were originally intended. Rhonda Howard Oak Creek; Beautiful portraits still not real icons A church congregation is made up of its people, whether they are housed in an architectural treasure or a storefront. A religious icon is not a portrait; it is meant to depict those things that are not of the earth. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. An icon is worth an entire sermon. Each detail, symbol and even the colors used in an icon represent Orthodox Christian teaching. It is important that an Orthodox Christian church contain real icons to teach people in a way that portraits, no matter how beautiful, cannot accomplish. The artworks of Eugene Masselink are the beautiful works of a very devout artist and we treasure them, but they are not real icons. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church building is a historic treasure, but it houses a real congregation, following a real faith, requiring real icons. Jackie Mazzairi Grafton
