Pope Benedict XVI greeted by thousands huddled beneath umbrellas

Pope Benedict XVI paid homage Saturday to one of his predecessors, Pope Pius VII, during a visit to Savona, the city where the 19th-century pope was imprisoned by Napoleon because he refused to give into the emperor's demands.
Taking Pius VII's resistance as an example, Benedict XVI told followers that the Church must never give in to compromise.
