meningitis C vaccine n. a vaccine that provides protection against the C strain of the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (the meningococcus), which accounts for approximately 50% of all cases of meningococcal meningitis and tends to occur in clusters. The vaccine is given to all babies with their primary immunizations at 3 and 4 months of age and as a booster at 12 months (see Immunization schedules). It can also be given as a single vaccine and is currently offered to everyone under the age of 24.
