Wixell, Ingvar

Wixell, Ingvar, Swedish baritone; b. Luleâ, May 7, 1931. He received his training at the Stockholm Musikhögskolan. In 1952 he made his concert debut in Gavie and in 1955 his operatic debut as Papageno at the Royal Theater in Stockholm, where he sang regularly from 1956. In 1960 he sang with the Royal Opera on its visit to London’s Covent Garden. He made his first appearance at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1962 as Cuglielmo. In 1966 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as Count Alma viva, and continued to sing there until 1969. From 1967 he sang at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, and made his U.S. debut as Belcore in Chicago that same year. In 1971 he made his first appearance at the Bayreuth Festival as the Herald in Lohengrin. In 1972 he made his debut at Covent Garden as Simon Boccanegra, and continued to sing there regularly until 1977. On Jan. 29,1973, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Rigoletto, where he made occasional appearances until 1980. He sang Amonasro in Houston in 1987. From 1987 to 1990 he sang once more at Covent Garden. In 1990 he appeared as Scarpia in Stuttgart, which role he then sang at Earl’s Court in London in 1991. Among his other roles were Don Giovanni, Mar-cello, Germont, and Mandryka.
