Hoboken, Anthony van

Hoboken, Anthony van, eminent Dutch music collector and bibliographer; b. Rotterdam, March 23, 1887; d. Zürich, Nov. 1, 1983. He studied with Anton Verhey in Delft. After studies with Knorr (composition) and Sekles (harmony) at the Hoch Cons, in Frankfurt am Main, he completed his training with Schenker in Vienna (1925–34). In 1919 he began to build a private collection of first and early eds. of music and literature associated with music. His collection on Haydn proved invaluable, and amassed to more than 1, 000 items. In 1927 he founded the Archiv für Photogramme musikalischer Meister-Handschriften in the music section of the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He publ. Joseph Haydn: Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis (2 vols., Mainz, 1957, 1971), designating Haydn’s works by H. or Hob. numbers. In 1974 the Austrian government purchased his private collection, which was officially opened at the Austrian National Library on Hoboken’s 90th birthday (March 23, 1977). J. Schmidt-Görg ed. a Festschrift for his 75th birthday (Mainz, 1962).
